Since his arrival in Canada in 2002, Sergiu Popa has received 3 different awards in recognition of his exceptional talent and performances.
In 2007, he received the Radio-Canada Étoiles Galaxie (rising star) award for his performance as the artistic director of ‘Bijando’, an eclectic program of traditional East European, Turkish and Argentine music involving 16 musicians and 2 dancers onstage. This production had its première at the MMM Music and People Festival in Montreal. Sergiu was able to finance the creation of this project and the original work commissioned for it through a creation grant from Le Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec.
In 2008, he was unanimously selected as the recipient of the Prix du Circuit 514 (click here for the press release), an 18-month long residency sponsored by five partners: CBC Radio2, La Place des Arts, Le Conseil des Arts de Montréal, MAI (Montreal, Arts Interculturels) and Vision Diversité.
In 2008, Sergiu was also awarded the 2nd prize for the Roland V-Accordion Festival, a nation-wide accordion competition.
